Writing is under way. If you have an argument worth making about recording, mixing or listening, pitches from writers with real experience are welcome.

Pitch a piece

What belongs here

Reviews answer “should I buy this” and guides answer “what should I buy at all”. The blog is for everything that does not reduce to a purchase: how a record was put together, why a technique works, what changed when streaming rewired the economics of releasing music, and what a decade of loudness-normalised playback did to the way things get mixed.

  • Craft — tracking, editing, mixing and the decisions that shape a record before any gear is involved.
  • Process — how small studios work, what they spend money on, and what they wish they had skipped.
  • Listening — formats, playback, loudness, and the difference between hearing a record and listening to one.
  • The business — streaming economics, self-releasing and what independence costs in practice.
  • Follow-ups — long-term notes on gear reviewed here after a year of actual use.

House style

Pieces are signed, argued and open to disagreement. Where a post makes a factual claim it is sourced; where it makes a judgement it says so in the first person. Corrections are published rather than quietly edited, and anyone criticised by name has a right of reply — both set out in the editorial policy.
